An internal memo stating the Trump government is considering imposing travel restrictions on 36 more nations was obtained by the Washington Post. Important American allies, Egypt and Djibouti, are among these nations.
Signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and delivered to all U.S. diplomats on Saturday, the memo states that the governments of the nations on the list have sixty days to satisfy fresh criteria established by the State Department.
According to the State Department, some of the nations mentioned above have not fulfilled several criteria. For instance, they have “no competent or cooperative central government authority” to generate accurate identification documents or a lot of residents who have violated their terms of their visas.
The report did state, however, that if a government decided to accept immigrants from other nations who were being returned home following American deportation, other concerns would be allayed.
On the list are twenty-five African nations that might have travel restrictions, visas, or other policies. These nations are Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Princiè
On the list also are a few Caribbean nations including Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Lucia.
Along with three Oceania nations (Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu), the list also features four Asian countries—Bhutan, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, and Syria.
These nations have until Wednesday at 8 a.m. to forward the State Department their initial action plan to satisfy the new criteria.
After that time, it’s unclear whether the flight limitations would still be in place.
Just one week after Trump reinstated his first-term travel ban and imposed a complete travel ban on twelve nations, the most recent internal document comes. He also limited travel to seven other nations.
Under a Trump-signed January directive, the State Department was instructed to identify nations “for which vetting and screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension”.
An integral component of the president’s immigration crackdown, these actions also include deporting a lot of illegal immigrants in the United States and making travel to and from some nations more difficult.
Although Trump’s anti-immigration posture was expected during his second term, both leaders and common Americans have been astounded by its scope and force.
